HowTo Network emblem How To: Gaming THE HOW TO CO. — EDITION 10
A controller wearing an aftermarket faceplate and tall coloured thumbstick caps.

SLOT 03 · CONTROLLERS · THE FACE

Two mods change how you play.

The rest change how it looks, which is a perfectly good reason — as long as you know which is which before you spend.

The back, and what goes on it.

THE DETAIL

Turn a pad over and the two genuine performance mods are both here. A paddle lets a finger that is currently doing nothing take over a face button, so your thumb never leaves the stick. A trigger stop shortens the pull to the point where it registers. Everything on the front is taste, and taste is allowed.

A desk at night: a controller, a spare faceplate, a paddle kit and a small screwdriver.

FROM THE CURATOR

Paddles first, everything else later

If you are going to spend on one mod, spend it on a paddle kit and then leave it alone for a month. It takes about a week before your ring finger stops feeling stupid and starts being useful, and if you have changed four other things at the same time you will never know which one did anything. Change one thing. Wait. Then decide.
