HowTo Network emblem How To: Gaming THE HOW TO CO. — EDITION 10
A game controller resting on a low shelf under warm light, other controllers behind it.

SLOT 03 / 08 · CONTROLLERS

The only station you hold in both hands.

Slot 03 lives on the shelf by the door and gets picked up more than anything else in the room. It also breaks more than anything else in the room.

The pad, face up.

THREE WAYS IN

Three chapters, three parts of one object. The shell is what you are choosing between when you buy — grip, weight, layout, and almost nothing else. The collar around the left stick is where every controller eventually fails. The face is where the ones that never fail get changed on purpose.

01 THE SHELL Grip, weight, layout 02 THE COLLAR Where drift starts, and ends 03 THE FACE Changed on purpose, not by wear
Five controllers of different shapes lined up in a row under warm light.

01

Choosing a Controller

Almost every pad on the shelf works. The question is which one your hands stop noticing after ten minutes.

  • Hand size and grip style, and how to test for both in a shop
  • What hall-effect sticks actually change, and what they do not
  • Wired, wireless, and the latency difference you can genuinely feel

02

Drift & Repairs

Stick drift is not bad luck and it is not you. It is a wear part reaching the end of a short life.

  • The two-minute test that tells you drift from a bad deadzone
  • Cleaning, recalibrating, and when that genuinely fixes it
  • Replacing a stick module: cost, difficulty, and when to stop
OPEN DRIFT & REPAIRS →
A controller with an aftermarket faceplate and coloured thumbstick caps beside a plain one.

03

Custom & Modded

Back buttons and short triggers are the two mods that change how you play. The rest change how it looks.

  • Paddles and back buttons: who they help and who they do not
  • Trigger stops, stick heights, and tension swaps
  • Faceplates and caps without voiding anything that matters
OPEN CUSTOM & MODDED →
A controller charging on a small dock, one contact pin lit.

Every pad in this room is a consumable. Plan accordingly.

FROM THE CURATOR

The drawer of dead pads

Everyone who has played for more than five years has one. Four controllers, three of them with a stick that pulls left, all of them kept because throwing away something that mostly works feels wrong. Open the drawer. Two of them are a twelve-pound module and twenty minutes from being fine, and the other two were never going to be. Knowing which is which is the entire chapter.
