HowTo Network emblem How To: Gaming THE HOW TO CO. — EDITION 10
A game controller resting face up on a dark shelf, grips and stick collars catching warm light.

SLOT 03 · CONTROLLERS · THE SHELL

Almost every pad on the shelf works.

The question is not which one is good. It is which one your hands stop noticing after ten minutes.

Two shells, overlaid.

THE DETAIL

Put two pads on top of one another and the differences that matter show up immediately, while the ones the box advertises disappear. Grip span decides whether your fingers reach comfortably. Stick offset decides whether your thumbs sit naturally or reach inward all evening. Weight decides how the third hour feels.

A shelf at night: controllers, a charging dock, coiled cables and a soft cloth.

FROM THE CURATOR

Hold it upside down

In a shop, turn the pad over and hold it the way you would during a long session, with the weight sitting on your ring and little fingers rather than gripped hard. That is the position your hands will actually be in for three hours, and it is the one that reveals whether the grips are too shallow. Nobody tests a controller that way and it is the only test that predicts anything.
