HowTo Network emblem How To: Gaming THE HOW TO CO. — EDITION 10
A motherboard CPU socket open on a bench, its retention arm raised, pin array catching violet light.

SLOT 01 · PC BUILDING · THE SOCKET

The part everyone holds their breath for.

A first build is not difficult. It is unfamiliar, expensive, and happening in an order nobody wrote down for you.

The socket, open.

THE DETAIL

Everything intimidating about a first build is concentrated here, and almost all of it comes down to three things: a notch that only fits one way, an arm that needs real force, and an array you must never touch. Get those right and the rest of the build is plugging things in.

01 THE NOTCH It only goes in one way round 02 THE ARM Needs more force than feels right 03 THE ARRAY Never touch, never blow on it

What we are writing.

5 PIECES · IN THE WORKSHOP

Five pieces for the first build. Ordered the way the evening actually goes, not the way a spec sheet is organised.

A processor held just above its open socket, the alignment notch visible at one corner.

Nothing in a first build is hard. It is only unfamiliar.

SLOT 01 · PC BUILDING · THE SOCKET
A bench at night: an open motherboard, a screwdriver, a paste syringe and a cloth.

FROM THE CURATOR

Build it on the box

Put the board on top of the box it came in, and fit the processor, the cooler and the memory there — on the desk, in good light, with room for your hands. Then lift the whole assembly into the case. Every first-build horror story I hear starts with someone reaching into a dark steel box at an angle, with one hand, holding a torch in their teeth.
