Amiibo and the card it came on.

A small figurine with a passive chip moulded into the base. Nintendo turned a shelf ornament into a save file, printed the packaging one region at a time, and then let half the line go quietly out of print.

WHAT SEALING KEEPS
The card. Never the figure.
WHAT THE REGION CHANGES
The printing, not the chip
WHAT STORAGE COSTS YOU
Card art fades before paint

The object is the chip. The value is the card.

CASE 01 · OPENED

Toys-to-life sold a figurine that was also a key. A decade on, the keys still turn — and almost everything the market argues about is the cardboard they arrived in.

An amiibo is two things pressed together. One is a moulded figure, which is a shelf object like any other on this wall. The other is a passive NFC tag set into the base: no battery, no firmware, nothing to go flat. It holds a tiny amount of data and it answers a reader that is held against it. That is the entire mechanism, and it is why a figure bought in 2014 still scans today while the Skylanders portal, the Disney Infinity base and the LEGO Dimensions pad have all outlived the companies and services behind them.

Because the tag is passive and first-party, it is also region-free. A figure bought in Osaka works on a console bought in Ohio. The packaging is not: card art, language panels, ratings marks and stock numbers are printed per territory, and some figures were retailer or region exclusives that never shipped anywhere else. So a loose amiibo is a global commodity with one price, while a sealed one is a regional printed artefact — and those are two different markets that happen to contain the same object.

Which settles the sealed-versus-loose question more cleanly than it is usually argued. Opening the pack does not touch the figure and does not touch the chip. It destroys a document: a piece of printed card that records which region pressed it, roughly when, and at what point in a print run that was never guaranteed to be repeated. The premium is for the document. It follows the print run, it widens as a wave recedes, and — this is the half that gets left out — a crease through the hang slot or a dented blister hands most of it straight back.

Storage follows from that, and it is not the advice most collectors expect. The vinyl is durable; the paint takes a decade of indirect light without complaint. The card does not. Printed card art fades under UV long before a sculpt shows anything, blister plastic yellows and goes brittle with heat cycling, and cardboard packed under weight takes a permanent bow. Keep sealed pieces upright, out of direct sun, off the attic and the garage, and — if the card is the thing you are actually keeping — in a rigid sleeve rather than a stack.

Sealed and loose, side by side.

THE DETAIL

The same invented figure drawn twice. On the left it is on its card under a blister; on the right the card is gone and only its outline is left. Nothing about the object has changed between the two — same sculpt, same paint, same tag in the base — so the difference in price is entirely a difference in paperwork. Below, that difference plotted honestly. Every row is one figure priced twice, so loose sits at 1x by definition and the bar is the premium itself. It widens as a print run recedes and it collapses when the card is damaged, which is the row most sealed-versus-loose arguments quietly leave off. The multiples are the shape of the resale market rounded to one figure, not a quote for any particular piece.

Opening the box does not damage the figure. It deletes the paperwork.

FROM THE CURATOR

Open it. Then keep the card like it is the object

I have never once regretted opening one, and I have regretted every card I threw away. Cut the blister off the back with a blade rather than tearing the front, keep the card flat in a rigid sleeve, and write nothing on it — not the price, not the date, not in pencil. The figure goes on the shelf where you can actually see it, which is the only reason you bought a figurine. The card goes in a box out of the light, because in ten years it is the half of the pair that will have quietly stopped existing.
