HowTo Network emblem How To: Gaming THE HOW TO CO. — EDITION 10
A single mechanical switch standing beside an open hot-swap socket, translucent housing lit from behind.

SLOT 02 · KEYBOARDS & MICE · ONE SOCKET

The cheapest upgrade in the whole room.

A bag of switches and an afternoon changes a keyboard more than spending three times as much would have.

One switch, in four parts.

THE DETAIL

A switch is four pieces and each does one job. The stem decides whether you feel a bump. The spring decides how heavy the key is. The housing decides how much of the noise escapes. Knowing which piece owns which complaint is the difference between fixing a board and buying another one.

01 THE STEM Bump or no bump lives here 02 THE SPRING How heavy every press feels 03 THE HOUSING How much noise gets out

What we are writing.

5 PIECES · IN THE WORKSHOP

Five pieces on changing how a board feels for the price of a takeaway.

01

How to choose between linear, tactile and clicky

In plain language, without a force-curve graph nobody can read.

★☆☆ · 5 MIN

02

How to tell if your keyboard is hot-swap

Thirty seconds and one keycap. Everything after depends on the answer.

★☆☆ · 3 MIN

03

How to swap every switch in a board

An hour, a puller, and the two mistakes that bend a pin.

★★☆ · 7 MIN

04

How to lube switches, and whether to bother

The honest version: what it changes, how long it takes, when to skip it.

★★★ · 9 MIN

05

How to quieten a board without changing the switches

Tape, foam and o-rings — which ones work and which are folklore.

★★☆ · 6 MIN

A dozen loose switches scattered on a dark mat, housings catching violet light.

Four parts. One of them owns your complaint.

SLOT 02 · KEYBOARDS & MICE · ONE SOCKET
A desk at night: a switch puller, lubricant, a fine brush and a tray of switch halves.

FROM THE CURATOR

Buy a switch tester, not a keyboard

Nine pounds gets you a little acrylic block with nine different switches in it. Keep it on the desk for a week and press it absently while you are reading. You will find you keep going back to the same one, and it is almost never the one the reviews told you to buy. That block has saved me more money than any other object in this room.
