A gaming mouse from directly above on a cloth pad, its shell shape and button split readable.

SLOT 02 · KEYBOARDS & MICE · THE SHAPE IN THE PALM

Sensors stopped being the problem.

Every sensor on the shelf is good now. Shape and weight are still the entire decision, and nobody prints them on the front of the box.

Three grips, one shell.

THE DETAIL

Everybody is told there are three grips and almost nobody is told what actually differs. It is not the mouse — it is where your hand touches it. Draw the same shell three times and mark the contact, and the whole thing becomes obvious: a palm grip touches almost the entire shell, a claw grip touches at two ends with an arch between, and a fingertip grip touches at the front and nowhere else. That contact pattern is what a shell has to suit.

FROM THE CURATOR

Trace your hand

Put your hand flat on paper and draw round it, then measure length from wrist crease to middle fingertip and width across the knuckles. Almost every mouse review lists the shell dimensions and almost nobody uses them. Two numbers on a scrap of paper turn mouse shopping from a guess into a filter, and it takes about ninety seconds.
