HowTo Network emblem How To: Gaming THE HOW TO CO. — EDITION 10
Dusk over tiled village rooftops, dozens of tethered lantern-kites floating high on thin lines above a valley of lit windows.

THE WHOLE GAME
on a thin line.

A phone, a borrowed signal, and a game that lives somewhere else entirely. It works better than you were told. It fails in ways nobody warned you about.

Every one of these games is somewhere else. What you are holding is the string.

Set it up once.

Most of what makes a phone game feel cheap is a setting you accepted in the first ninety seconds. Storage, notifications, the battery lie, and the controller nobody mentions it already supports.

The honest version.

You can love one of these without pretending the maths is on your side. Read the published rate, decide your number before you open the shop, and learn which currency was never meant to be spent at all.

Streaming does not fail the way a download fails. It fails as delay — and delay has three causes you can actually test in an evening. Two of them are yours. One of them is just the distance.

Two hilltop signal towers seen at a distance through a valley, a faint chain of lights strung between them at last light.
THE HOLDING LINE

What the line will hold.

The further a game has to reach for you, the more of it stops being yours. Everything below hangs off the same connection — the deeper it hangs, the more that connection is carrying, and the less of it you control.

ON THE DEVICE

Downloaded, and yours. The connection only carries your saves, and it can wait until morning to do it.

STREAMED

The pictures themselves arrive over the line. Every frame is a round trip, and you can feel the ones that take too long.

ALWAYS ONLINE

The game declines to exist without the line. One dropped bar in a stairwell and the session is simply gone.

THE LINE, FROM UNDERNEATH

“A phone is not a small console. It is a different instrument, and half of playing well on one is admitting that.”
