HowTo Network emblem How To: Gaming THE HOW TO CO. — EDITION 10
A high-backed gaming chair pulled slightly away from a dark wood desk, bolsters lit from the side.

SLOT 07 / 08 · DESKS & CHAIRS

The station that outlasts everything on it.

Slot 07 will still be here after three graphics cards and two monitors. It is the only one that sends you a bill later.

The seat, from the side.

THREE WAYS IN

This is the one station that is not really about a product. Two identical chairs, one set up properly and one not, are different pieces of furniture. What matters is the height of the surface, the height of the seat, and the two right angles that fall out of getting both correct — elbow and knee. Everything a chair advertises is downstream of those.

01

Gaming Chairs

The racing shape is styling. Adjustability is the product. Only one of those is on the front of the box.

  • The four adjustments worth paying for, and the ones that are trim
  • Gaming chair versus office chair at the same price
  • How to tell in ten minutes in a showroom, and what to ignore

SOON · IN THE WORKSHOP

A monitor arm clamped to the rear edge of a desk, the clamp jaw biting the wood.

02

Desk Setup

Depth matters more than width, and almost every desk sold for gaming gets the depth wrong.

  • Finding the right surface height for your actual body
  • Monitor arms, clamp depth, and desks that cannot take one
  • Cable trays, and getting the loom off the floor for good

SOON · IN THE WORKSHOP

A chair seen from the side at seated height, lumbar cushion in place, armrest at desk level.

03

Ergonomics

Nothing here is about sitting up straight. It is about being able to move, and about the next hour rather than this minute.

  • Screen height, and the neck angle that follows from it
  • Wrist position, and why the keyboard tilt feet make it worse
  • The break pattern that actually gets followed

SOON · IN THE WORKSHOP

The five-star base and castors of a chair on a rug, the gas cylinder rising out of frame.

Cheap chairs are not expensive until about year four.

SLOT 07 · DESKS & CHAIRS
A wide room scene at night: desk, chair, rug and a floor lamp, the whole working corner.

FROM THE CURATOR

Raise the screen, not the chair

The single most common mistake in this room is a monitor sitting on the desk at desk height, and a person slowly craning down at it for six years. You cannot fix that with a better chair. You fix it with a stack of books under the monitor tonight and an arm at the weekend, and the difference in how your neck feels by Thursday is genuinely startling for something that cost nothing.
