An upright matte console box on a shelf under a dusk window, its vent grille glowing faintly violet.

SLOT 04 · CONSOLES · THE UPRIGHT BAY

Standing up, and warmer than you think.

The upright bay is the one that runs hottest and fills up fastest. Both are one evening of work, once.

The bay, and the air in it.

THE DETAIL

A console standing on a shelf draws air along its whole height and pushes it out of the top. Put it in a cubby exactly its own size and that path closes, the fan compensates, and you spend two years listening to it. The clearances are not fussy — they are the difference between a quiet machine and a loud one.

SLOT 04 · CONSOLES · THE UPRIGHT BAY
A shelf at night: an upright console, a controller on a stand, a slim drive and a cloth.

FROM THE CURATOR

Leave it four inches

Almost every console problem I get asked about is a heat problem wearing a costume. The fan got loud, the picture dropped out, it started shutting down in long sessions. Then you look at the shelf and the box is in a cubby exactly its own width with a cable loom packed in behind it. Four inches of air at the back and above is not a tip. It is most of the maintenance this thing will ever need.
